A number of recurring events usually take place at The Lyric. These are detailed below.
Puppet Club
Our very popular Puppet Club takes place two or three times a year. It is a 5-week course for all ages and abilities, from ages 6 to 106 (under 10s are to be accompanied by an adult) that does what it says on the tin! No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. Many puppet clubbers find they return time after time!
Over the course of five sessions, the Lyric’s resident puppet maker extraordinaire Holly Miller will show you how to make your very own puppet, upstairs in The Lyric’s fantastic puppet making workshop. Using recycled materials – papers, masking tape, papier maché, fabrics, paints, buttons, etc – Puppet Club invites you to let your imagination run riot and create your own animal or person to take home at the end of the course.
All materials are included in the course fee, which is usually £45. Accompanying adults (for under 10s) are free. Puppet Club courses will be listed under our ‘What’s On’ and if you’re on our mailing list you’ll be notified in advance. The courses usually take place 5-6:30pm on Mondays, and are always during term time. There are limited places each time so please ensure you book early to avoid disappointment.
New Puppet Club course starts Tuesday April 18th and runs for 5 weeks.

Story Café
Bridport Story Café offers regular evenings of magical myths, lively legends and wild tales performed by professional storytellers and musicians. Story Café takes place at the Lyric every two months on different nights of the week.
Christine Bell started Bridport Story Café around 10 years ago to share her passion of excellent storytelling (for adults) with the community and was very well connected (and respected) within the UK storytelling scene. Story Café moved to The Lyric from Bridport Arts Centre in January 2019 when it had outgrown the café space there due to popular demand.
In December 2019 we hosted WinterFest, a special evening acknowledging the ending – after eight years – of Christine’s hard work curating the Bridport Story Café. The baton has been handed over to Martin Maudsley, a fine storyteller himself, to programme future Story Café events.

Laughs at the Lyric
Started up by comedian Tom Glover this is a monthly new material comedy night featuring a changing line-up of new comedians. Hosted by Tom and our very own Niki McCretton (who is also a stand-up comedian!) Bridport’s funniest night out is usually on a Tuesday night, and there’s a bucket collection to pay what you feel on the night.
