operations Manager
Role Title: Part-time Operations Manager, The Lyric Theatre, Bridport
(Full name: Friends of The Lyric Theatre, C.I.C.)
Responsible to: Artistic Director, Lyric Theatre
Contract terms: Fixed-term freelance contract, June 2024 – end March 2025
40 half days per year (2 days per month flexi) @ £150/day; responsible for managing their own time
Contract Fee: £3000 (payable £300 / month on receipt of invoice)
Main tasks of the Operations Manager
This is a new post, working with the Artistic Director and Administrator to manage the operations of The Lyric Theatre, creating procedures for the management of the Lyric Theatre and work with the team to implement them.
The Lyric Theatre is grade 2 listed, historic building and an Artist and Female led C.I.C which operates as a hub for creatives, locally, nationally and internationally. The Lyric has a mission to provide space for creatives, professional and non-professional to further and deepen their creative practice. The Lyric responds to offers and ideas as well as presenting performances as different stages of the creation process, through to finished, touring work. The C.I.C has recently secured funding from Bridport Town Council and Dorset County Council, to work in partnership with Bridport Arts Centre.
We seek an Operations Manager to work with our team in a dynamic organisation that responds to our community of audience members, participants and artists. The organisation has a creative culture, with many team members having an artistic practice of their own, many of whom are involved in the local community. We have a team of generous and motivated volunteers who are the beating heart of what we do.
The Lyric is known for being the venue in the town and county that is experimental, and artist led. It often brings unexpected offers and the organisation is action-led and vibrant in its thinking.
We run a part-time programme of events, some at The Lyric and some as outreach into community spaces. Events are approximately once a week. We also hire the main theatre space to others for rehearsals and occasionally for celebrations or live music.
Pre-covid, the theatre let out space for a café to operate at the front of the building. Although we currently do not have a café tenant, this is something we seek during this coming year. The café creates a fun space for people to meet and, in the summer, operates outside on the pavement.
The Operations Manager will work with the team to ensure that the building is well run and has organised procedures for the team to follow. The Operations Manager will need to work in situ at the Lyric Theatre. This is not a remote working position.
Job Description
- Ensure all policies are up to date and being implemented.
- fire alarm servicing is regularly completed
- utility bill management
- maintenance management
- ensure venue is ready for events working alongside Administrator
- manage volunteers – cleaning and decorative maintenance
- create and action a risk register
- bar stock management
- track bar income and expenditure
- Keep clear records and file paperwork clearly
- liaise with & manage cafe hirer’s
- create and manage risk assessments,
- implement and monitor health & safety
- ensure all insurances are up to date
- ensure licencing details are up to date and implemented
- report maintenance issues to Artistic Director and Directors
- be a key holder
Essential Skills
Previous experience of operations management for a premises
Good knowledge of health and safety procedures
Good level of experience of risk assessment
Ability to work in a team with other part-time workers
IT skills and ability to keep accurate and clear records
A highly organised and diligent professional
Efficient time manager
Positive and passionate outlook
Desired Skills
Previous experience of working with volunteers
Understanding of licensing – entertainment and bar
Knowledge of PRS agreements

Main tasks of the Theatre Programmer
To work with the Artistic Director and Administrator to lead on programming at The Lyric Theatre.

The Theatre Programmer will work with the team to ensure that the programme connects with our local community as audience and supports the community of working artists in Dorset and the SW. This year Bridport is a pilot for The Town of Culture initiative and the programmer will work to enhance the mission of the Town of Culture through our programme. They will be expected to work in the building when possible with some remote working possible. Days in the building would ideally be attached to some of the programme. You will be expected to attend a number of meeting with partners.
- Lead on programming a number of events (circa 20) per year
- Minimise programming clashes with other venues and town activities
- Ensure technical aspects of the visiting work are appropriate for the space and book technical support from our P/T technician pool.
- Generate programme ideas based on business plan, organisational aims & vision – promote access and diversity for work on stage & audience development
- Negotiate artists fees and box office splits, royalties and any marketing contras
- Issue contracts and ensure they are signed & returned prior to events go on sale
- Support artists in organising accommodation
- Artist liaison, be a listening ear for ideas
- Organise residencies and workshops
- Enhance our Community/Young People development via the programme
- Prepare marketing materials for administrator including writing press releases
- Event evaluation, documenting and archiving of events
- Create and implement an audience development plan alongside Artistic Director
- Monitor and track ticket sales
- Work to an agreed budget & ensure due financial diligence to maximise income opportunities while being supportive of visiting company’s financial expectations
- Work with Artistic Director to develop forward plans for the organisation’s outputs
- Liaise with PRS
- Other administrative duties associated with running the programme
- Work with the wider team & volunteers to ensure the Lyric flourishes
- Protect the Lyric’s values and ethos
- Provide regular, written reports to AD & Steering Group/Board
Essential Skills
Knowledge of current creative sector with a specialism in and passion for live theatre
Programming, contracting and PRS experience
Ability to hit the ground running
Experience of working with artists who tour and create their own work
Working knowledge regarding access, equality and inclusion
Strong time management skills
Self-motivated and an excellent communicator
Experience of evaluation processes for funders
A flexible mindset and creative thinker
Working knowledge of IT, including digital diaries, project planning tools, spreadsheets.
Able to work in a team with other P/T workers.
