“If at first you don’t succeed then try, try, try again. A well known maxim that has encouraged us for many years to not lose hope…”
Magdalena and the Mystical Birds came together as a new band in late 2019. Writing original songs that range from light jazz to chanson and folk/blues to festival chants, they planned to launch on 21 March 2020 with a performance at The Lyric.
Good preparation but poor timing, because it was the weekend that lockdown was announced, and they were to have no audience. Undeterred they pressed ahead and became ostensibly the ‘first’ band to play in lockdown.
Until now they haven’t been able to try again but this rescheduled date has offered them the opportunity to be the first band to perform on The Lyric’s stage since lockdown.
Polish-born singer/songwriter Magdalena Atkinson had recorded two albums with Steve Jones (formerly of cult folk band Heron and 11 year member of Mungo Jerry) when they decided to create a band to record a third album. Enlisting the help of ‘punk’ bass player Drew Crow Star and samba percussionist Darren Coleman the resulting chemistry proved irresistible and The Mysticals were born.
Fortunately they had had the foresight to video and multitrack record their first Lyric Theatre performance and will now launch the resultant live album ‘Lockdown Live at The Lyric’ at the gig.
Special guest Marina Renee-Cemmick will add an unexpected and exciting backdrop to the show, literally, because, as a very talented local painter and street artist, she will be creating a theatre backdrop in her own unique style while the band performs.
Lockdown has been a huge challenge for everyone, but Magdalena and The Mystical Birds managed to use it as an opportunity to rehearse and write new songs online. Try, try again has become their motto.
Tickets for the gig are available in advance from Bridport TIC; online streaming tickets are available from https://www.magdalenaatkinson.co.uk/
A limited bar will be available (cash and card payments accepted) serving ale, lager, wine and soft drinks. We encourage audiences to wear a mask while moving around the building, unless seated and/or drinking.
